ILM Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma in First Line Management
- The ILM Level 3 qualifications have been designed in a unit-based format to satisfy QCF
requirement and business preferences. The content is specified in units, each of which has a title, a level, a credit rating and a series of learning outcomes and associated assessment criteria.
2. The Award, Certificate and Diploma qualifications are specified in terms of the minimum total credits required, and indicate the mandatory units with their respective credit values.
Optional units may be selected to meet individual or sponsor’s needs to reach the total minimum credits required for the qualification.
Award - Duration (1) Year
This qualification is aimed at giving practising or potential first line managers the foundation for their formal development in this role, by developing basic middle management skills. Complete one mandatory unit with a credit of 2 and optional units with a minimum total credit value of 3.
The programme aims to help the development of both the personal attributes and resources of the manager, as well as their skills and capabilities in solving problems and understanding the different leadership styles.
Qualification Structure
The qualification requires the learner to complete a mandatory unit ‘Solving problems and making decisions’ to gain 2 credits and choose from a list of optional units to gain a further 3 units to complete the course. The optional units and credits attained are identified within the course booklet.
Certificate - Duration (1) Year
This qualification is aimed at giving practising or potential first line managers the foundation for their formal development in this role, by developing basic middle management skills. The programme aims to help the development of both the personal attributes and resources of the manager, as well as their skills and capabilities in solving problems, understanding change in the workplace and leading innovation and change.
Qualification Structure
Complete four mandatory units with a credit of 7 and select from a list of optional units with a minimum total credit value of 13. The four mandatory units are:
- Solving problems and making decisions
- Understanding change in the workplace
- Planning change in the workplace
- Achieving objectives through time management
The optional units and credits attained for the certificate qualification are identified within the course booklet.
Diploma – Duration (1) Year
This qualification is aimed at giving practising or potential first line managers the foundation for their formal development in this role, by developing basic middle management skills. Complete nine mandatory units with a combined credit value of 13 and choose from a list of optional units with a total minimum credit value of 24 to achieve the 37 credits for the Diploma qualification.
Qualification Structure
The nine mandatory units to be completed are:
- Solving problems and making decisions
- Understanding change in the workplace
- Planning change in the workplace
- Achieving objectives through time management
- Writing for business
- Managing creativity and innovation in the workplace
- Obtaining information for effective management
- Managing customer service
- Giving briefings and making presentations in the workplace
The optional units and credits attained for the Diploma are identified within the course booklet.
Qualification Assessment for the ILM Level 3 Courses
All units will be assessed (individually or in clusters) if they are to count towards the
Qualification by TPDU assessors. A range of assessment methodologies will be used to assess work submitted for the different qualifications i.e. Work Based assignments
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for the level 3 first line management qualifications, but learners will:
• normally be either practising or aspiring first line managers with the opportunity to meet the assessment demands, and
• have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme – which is likely to be Level 2 Key Skills Literacy and Numeracy or their equivalent.

Successful candidates may benefit from career enhancement and/or progress to any of the
further qualifications listed, according to their circumstances:

All registered candidates automatically become studying members of the ILM for one year,
free of charge, and can enjoy a range of member benefits accessible through the ILM website.
Studying members are encouraged to upgrade to the appropriate professional grade of membership to enjoy additional benefits which will support their career and personal development. Successful completion of a Level 3 qualification provides eligibility for Associate Membership (AMInstLM) of the Institute of Leadership & Management.
